Description
The first steamboat to travel on the Ohio River was in 1811. Within a short period of time Cincinnati emerged as a significant part of the industry. Cincinnati shipyards launched twenty-five steamboats between 1811 and 1825, and the number only increased after that period. The industry and the transportation system that it developed helped Cincinnati to become one of the most important cities in the West prior to the Civil War. Today, one can still watch huge barges moving materials up and down the Ohio.
The Belle of Cincinnati is a bit of nostalgia reminding us of the past when river boats were the main source of transport,.plying the nations major waterways.
