Description
Bloody Lane is the infamous road down which Union troops advanced on the fateful afternoon of September 17, 1862 during the American Civil War. All day long, fierce battles occurred in numerous areas of what is now Antietam Battlefield National Park in Maryland, USA. This sunken road was the site of the most intense fighting. After four hours of intense fire by both Union and Confederate sides, so many men lay dead, the road ran red with blood flowing like a river. It has since been known as Bloody Lane. That day was the bloodiest one-day battle in Ameircan history., with 23,000 men killed, wounded or missing.
