Description
Some years back, I was roaming around Pittsburgh, PA looking for photo opportunities. The city is known for its diverse architecture from Gothic, to Romanesque, to Art Deco, to contemporary and every style in between. There are a lot of skyscrapers in the city, particularly in the downtown area. Looking up, I felt as if I was walking at the bottom of a deep canyon. when I took this photo.
From left to right: Koppers Building, Gulf Tower and UPMC Building,
Koppers Building is an historical building commissioned by Andrew W. Mellon and completed in 1929. The building is named after the Koppers Chemical Corporation and is one of the major features of Downtown Pittsburgh.
The Gulf Tower is a 44-story, 582 ft Art Deco skyscraper. The tower is one of the major distinctive and recognizable features of the city. Built as the headquarters for the Gulf Oil Company, the crown of the skyscraper is modeled in the style of a step pyramid.
The tallest skyscraper in the city, is occupied by health giant UPMC and U.S. Steel, two of the region's most well-known companies. Prior to 1970, the tallest building in Pittsburgh at 44 stories was the Gulf Tower. In the planning stages, U.S. Steel executives considered making the building the world's tallest, but settled on 840 ft and the distinction of being the tallest building outside New York and Chicago. However, it eventually lost even that distinction to newer buildings erected across the United States.
